Malawi’s Fuel Price Hike
Malawi’s energy regulator, Mera, has increased petrol and diesel prices by over 40%, the second hike in four months, citing the unsustainability of the previous fixed pricing system. This decision, part of President Peter Mutharika’s efforts to revive the economy, could exacerbate the cost-of-living crisis, as transport and food prices are expected to rise. Since Mutharika took office, petrol and diesel costs have surged by 95% and 80%, respectively. Mera now employs an automatic pricing mechanism to adjust fuel prices based on shipping expenses.
