A campaign led by Samba Yonga, co-founder of the Women’s History Museum of Zambia, aims to challenge misconceptions about African literacy and highlight women’s roles in pre-colonial societies through the rediscovery of Zambian artefacts, including a wooden hunters’ toolbox inscribed with an ancient writing system and intricately decorated leather cloaks. Despite the historical erasure caused by colonialism, the initiative seeks to reconnect with cultural heritage and emphasize the significance of women in Zambian history. The project features 50 artefacts shared via social media to showcase the depth of local knowledge systems and the importance of reclaiming cultural identities.
