Gen Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, who led the republican guard and orchestrated a coup in Gabon in August 2023, has implemented a hire purchase scheme offering over 800 new vehicles to unemployed youth in the country. This initiative has provided opportunities for individuals like Landry Obame-Mezui, a taxi driver, to become entrepreneurs. As the country prepares for the upcoming presidential and general election, Oligui Nguema is the frontrunner, with his campaign dominating the city of Libreville. However, some voters, like Shonnys Akoulatele, are skeptical of the candidates’ ability to bring true transformation to Gabon, as many of them have ties to the previous ruling regime.
