MPs have found that around 2.1 million children in England are eligible for free school meals, but many are missing out due to parents not signing up. The education select committee is calling for automatic enrolment to prevent children from going hungry, with estimates showing that 471,000 children are needlessly missing out. The proposed Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Bill aims to address this issue, along with other measures to support vulnerable children, such as universal free breakfast clubs and improved mental health support.
