Burdett “Burd” Sisler, the oldest known living Canadian and one of the world’s oldest World War II veterans, has passed away at the age of 110. His family announced that Sisler died of natural causes on Thursday, just under two weeks shy of his 111th birthday. His son, Norm Sisler, expressed a mix of sorrow and gratitude, noting the significant impact Burd made in his community and at the local Legion. A funeral service is set for April 9 at Benner Funeral Home in Fort Erie, Ontario.

Why It Matters

Burdett Sisler’s longevity and status as a World War II veteran highlight the experiences of a generation that lived through significant historical events. As one of the last surviving veterans of that era, his life story serves as a vital link to the past, providing insight into the sacrifices made during the war. The passing of supercentenarians like Sisler raises awareness of the dwindling number of individuals who can recount firsthand experiences from pivotal moments in history, underscoring the importance of preserving these narratives for future generations.
