BAKU, Azerbaijan, March 28. According to a source at the Bulgarian Ministry of Energy speaking to Trend, Bulgaria and Azerbaijan have the potential to explore hydrogen production together.
“Bulgaria and Azerbaijan are dedicated to enhancing their strategic partnership, particularly in the energy sector, which is crucial for economic development. There are numerous promising opportunities for cooperation between the two countries. By tapping into the vast potential of hydrogen as a clean and sustainable energy source, we believe that joint efforts in research, development, and application of hydrogen technologies can enhance energy security and contribute to global efforts in reducing carbon emissions,” the source stated.
The source also emphasized that investing in renewable energy sources (RES) is another important area for potential bilateral cooperation.
“Through investments in solar, wind, and other renewable energy projects, Bulgaria and Azerbaijan can diversify their energy sources, enhance energy security, and work towards a more sustainable future. The development of infrastructure, such as cross-border transmission lines and energy storage facilities, is crucial for successful energy cooperation. Building modern and efficient infrastructure can facilitate the smooth exchange of energy resources between the two countries and promote regional stability and economic growth,” the source added.
The source expressed gratitude for the strong and reliable relations between Bulgaria and Azerbaijan, which provide a solid foundation for future joint projects and initiatives.
“The established partnership between our countries sets a positive precedent for exploring new areas of cooperation that will be mutually beneficial,” the source noted.
A study conducted by Advisian consulting firm with the support of the EBRD highlights Azerbaijan’s potential to meet the demand for low-carbon hydrogen, particularly in established downstream ammonia and methanol markets. With its extensive natural gas distribution systems that can be adapted for hydrogen use, Azerbaijan is well-positioned to play a key role in decarbonizing these industries.
Given its abundant renewable resources and direct access to natural gas reservoirs like those in the Shah Deniz field, Azerbaijan has the strategic advantage to develop green and blue hydrogen technologies. The existing infrastructure for natural gas supply, such as the Southern Gas Corridor, offers opportunities for seamless integration of hydrogen, including the potential for blending with natural gas for export purposes.
