Australian coach Sandy Brondello led the New York Liberty to their first WNBA title in a thrilling overtime victory over Minnesota in game five of the finals at the Barclays Center. The Liberty, who had lost five previous finals series, secured a 67-62 win with Breanna Stewart’s clutch free throws and key plays by Leonie Fiebich and Nyara Sabally. Despite a back injury, Australian forward Alanna Smith of the Lynx put up a tough fight, but ultimately New York emerged victorious after a hard-fought battle to claim their long-awaited championship.
