Britain seeks to build homegrown rival to OpenAI in bid to become world leader in artificial intelligence

The U.K. government, under Prime Minister Keir Starmer, is aiming to establish a homegrown rival to OpenAI and significantly enhance national computing infrastructure to become a global leader in artificial intelligence. Plans include increasing public sector computing capacity by twentyfold by 2030 and opening access to the AI Research Resource to boost U.K. computing infrastructure. In addition, the government will create AI growth zones to streamline data center development and form an AI Energy Council to explore renewable energy sources for AI development.
