Boston College hires Luke Murray as basketball coach

Boston College has appointed Luke Murray, a former assistant at UConn, as the new head coach of its struggling men’s basketball program, which has not reached the NCAA Tournament in 17 years. Murray, who is the son of actor Bill Murray, will be stepping into his first head coaching role after replacing Earl Grant, who was dismissed following a lackluster tenure that included four losing seasons out of five. During his time at UConn, Murray contributed to two national championship teams under coach Dan Hurley. Boston College’s athletic director praised Murray’s leadership and offensive vision as key factors in his selection. Previously, Murray held assistant positions at Louisville, Xavier, and several other institutions, and he will become the 14th head coach in Boston College history. The Eagles have struggled in the Atlantic Coast Conference, finishing no higher than 10th since the league expanded to 15 teams in the 2013-14 season.

Why It Matters

The hiring of Luke Murray comes at a critical juncture for Boston College, which has faced significant challenges in the competitive ACC, highlighted by a disappointing performance in recent seasons. The program’s lack of NCAA Tournament appearances over the past 17 years underscores a prolonged period of underachievement, making this leadership change pivotal. Murray’s experience with successful programs at UConn, where he was part of championship-winning teams, provides a foundation that Boston College hopes will revitalize its basketball fortunes. As the program looks to improve, the effectiveness of Murray’s coaching strategies will be closely monitored, as the Eagles aim to break their tournament drought and enhance their standing in the ACC.
