A 74-year-old truck driver who fell into a 16-meter deep sinkhole in Yashio, Japan, on January 28, 2025, was recovered after three months, as search efforts were complicated by the risk of further ground instability. The sinkhole, which has expanded to over 40 meters in diameter due to corroded sewage pipes, led to the tragic discovery of the man’s body inside the truck. The rising incidence of sinkholes in Japan, particularly related to sewage issues, has become a growing concern, with over 10,000 reported in 2022.
