Bob Nightengale keeps trying to rehab Trevor Bauer
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

At times, it is necessary to report on controversial figures in sports due to their actions being too significant to ignore. Trevor Bauer is not one of those figures, yet Bob Nightengale seemed eager to align himself with Bauer, alongside Rachel Luba. Nightengale attempted to downplay Bauer’s expulsion from Major League Baseball, highlighting his meaningless exhibition game against Dodgers minor leaguers. Nightengale failed to acknowledge the serious allegations of sexual assault against Bauer, instead focusing on superficial details like fan support and Bauer’s performance on the field.

Nightengale’s focus on trivial details rather than the serious allegations against Bauer is troubling. Bauer was suspended from MLB for violating the rules on domestic violence and sexual assault, yet Nightengale chose to emphasize Bauer’s baseball skills rather than his misconduct. This underscores a concerning trend in sports media of downplaying serious issues in favor of sensationalist narratives.

USWNT bounces back

The USWNT redeemed themselves by winning the W Gold Cup, albeit not in a convincing manner. Despite struggling in the semifinals against Canada, they managed to secure a victory against Brazil in the final. The team’s performance was not flawless, but players like Lindsey Horan and Korbin Albert stood out amidst a team still finding its form.

The USWNT experimented with tactics in the final, showcasing a 4-4-2 diamond formation that added a new dimension to their play. The midfield duo of Sam Coffey and Albert provided much-needed solidity, with Coffey’s contribution leading to the decisive goal. While Brazil had moments of brilliance, the US defense held firm, exemplified by Naomi Girma and Tierna Davidson’s resilience.

The victory over Brazil partially erased the disappointment of the defeat to Mexico, serving as a reminder that the team must remain vigilant against any opponent. Emma Hayes’s arrival this summer promises further tactical evolution, as seen in the team’s varied formations during the tournament. Coffey and Albert emerged as key players, offering valuable contributions to the team.
