Blinken Meets With Brazil’s President Over Israel
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken addressed President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of Brazil on Wednesday regarding his recent controversial remarks on Israel, specifically his comparison of Israel’s actions in Gaza to the Holocaust.

This exchange highlighted how the ongoing conflict in Gaza has evolved into a broader diplomatic challenge for the United States, with the increasing death toll prompting more nations to speak out against Israel’s offensive.

A heated dispute between Brazil and Israel erupted over Mr. Lula’s statements, culminating in his comparison of Israel’s actions to a significant historical event. This led to a sharp response from Israeli officials and escalated tensions between the two countries.

In response, Brazil recalled its ambassador to Israel for consultations and considered further actions if the situation worsened.

During a 90-minute meeting in Brasília, Mr. Blinken had a candid discussion with Mr. Lula, expressing disagreement with the Brazilian leader’s recent remarks. The U.S. emphasized its efforts to secure the release of hostages held by Hamas and implement humanitarian pauses in the conflict.

Both officials agreed on the shared goal of ending the conflict swiftly, but under conditions that prevent future attacks by Hamas and break the cycle of violence.

The discussion also touched on the broader impact of the Israel-Gaza conflict on global diplomacy, with countries in the global south expressing opposition to U.S. policy and calling for cease-fires.

Brazil and South Africa emerged as vocal critics of the war, highlighting a lack of support for Israel among developing nations. The U.S. has clashed with allies in the U.N. and The Hague over the conflict, vetoing resolutions that did not align with its stance on Israel’s right to self-defense.

Despite differences over the Gaza war, the meeting between Mr. Blinken and Mr. Lula also focused on collaboration in addressing challenges in Venezuela and Haiti, as well as enhancing cooperation on various issues like supply chains, worker rights, and the environment.
