A 63-year-old Chinese man, Wen Wang, was sentenced for defrauding elderly victims in a spiritual blessings scam after accumulating $30,000 in gambling debts. Wang, who gained victims’ trust by claiming he could remove curses and heal illnesses, was involved in 75 scams across Sydney, where he swapped victims’ valuables for worthless items. He received a 14-month sentence with a non-parole period of seven months and will be deported post-release. His co-accused, Yuee Ruan, received the same sentence for her role in the criminal group.
