A hunter, Paul William Stevens, has pleaded guilty to the careless use of a firearm causing the death of 21-year-old Jock David Grant Davies on Stewart Island. The incident occurred when Stevens fired at a “dark shadowy image” in thick bush without identifying his target during a planned hunting trip with Davies’ family. The group had travelled to the South Lords Hut for a week-long expedition. The shooting took place on July 6, following a year of planning and obtaining necessary permits.
