Birnbeck Pier, crucial to the Dambusters raid during World War II, has received a £10 million grant from the National Lottery for restoration. The pier, at risk of collapse, will be made safe for public use by North Somerset Council and the RNLI, with plans to build a new lifeboat station. Opened in 1867, Birnbeck Pier is the only UK pier connecting the mainland to an island and played a significant role in trials for the bouncing bomb used in the Dambusters raid.
