Biologists work to protect bats from white-nose syndrome
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

In Highlands, North Carolina, biologists are racing to save tricolored bats from the devastating effects of white-nose syndrome, a fungal disease that has led to a drastic decline in bat populations since its detection in the early 2000s. The bats, essential for controlling crop-destroying insects, face starvation during hibernation due to disrupted sleep caused by the fungus. To combat this, researchers are experimenting with attracting bugs to increase the bats’ fat stores before winter. Despite the challenges, there is hope as conservationists work to ensure the survival of these vital creatures.
