Billions of flies to be dumped out of planes in an effort to fight flesh-eating maggot known as “man-eater”

The U.S. government plans to breed billions of sterilized New World Screwworm flies and release them over Mexico and southern Texas to combat a flesh-eating maggot threatening livestock and pets. By reducing the fly population through sterilization, the USDA aims to protect the beef industry and wildlife, with new breeding facilities expected by 2026.
