Bethesda will shut down The Elder Scrolls: Blades on June 30

Bethesda has announced the permanent shutdown of servers for The Elder Scrolls: Blades, a mobile spinoff of the popular franchise, effective June 30. The game has already been removed from the App Store, Google Play Store, and Nintendo Store. As a farewell gesture, players will be offered a complimentary bundle of Gems and Sigils, with all in-game store items available for just one Gem or Sigil. Launched in 2020, Blades initially saw over one million downloads within its first week but failed to achieve lasting commercial success, ultimately receiving a “Generally Unfavorable” score on Metacritic due to its repetitive gameplay and heavy microtransactions. This closure follows Bethesda’s earlier decision to cease development on another spinoff, The Elder Scrolls: Legends, which went offline in January 2025.

Why It Matters

The shutdown of The Elder Scrolls: Blades marks a significant moment in the ongoing evolution of mobile gaming, particularly for franchises that have struggled to transition into the mobile market. While the game experienced strong initial downloads, it could not maintain a user base or generate sufficient revenue compared to Bethesda’s mainline titles. The negative critical reception reflects broader challenges in the mobile gaming sector, where consumer expectations for quality and value continue to rise. The closure of Blades, alongside The Elder Scrolls: Legends, highlights the difficulty of sustaining long-term engagement with mobile adaptations of established franchises.
