The death toll from the wildfires in Los Angeles has reached 16, with firefighters struggling to contain the blaze threatening the city’s landmarks. New evacuation orders have been issued as firefighters work to prevent further spread before strong winds return. The fires have burned tens of thousands of acres, over 12,000 structures, and preliminary estimates suggest they could be the nation’s costliest ever, with damages and losses estimated between $135bn and $150bn.
