The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) announced the culling of ostriches at Universal Ostrich Farms in Edgewood, B.C., after avian flu was detected in December, which had already killed 70 birds. This decision followed the Supreme Court of Canada’s refusal to hear an appeal to save the flock. The CFIA determined that using professional marksmen in a controlled setting was the most humane option, with all actions supervised by CFIA veterinarians. Prior to the cull, the farm housed approximately 300 to 330 ostriches.
