A bar owner in Milwaukee has decided to close his establishment during the Republican National Convention (RNC) this summer in order to avoid serving supporters of former President Donald Trump.
The RNC is scheduled to take place in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, from July 15 to 18. With Trump securing the required delegates to become the GOP presidential nominee, delegates are expected to officially nominate him during the convention.
The Mothership, a cocktail bar located in the Bay View neighborhood of Milwaukee, has announced its decision to close during the convention. The bar’s owner, Ricky Ramirez, expressed his desire to avoid serving the crowd expected to attend the event, citing his personal experiences with discrimination and the divisive rhetoric associated with Trump’s supporters.
Ramirez stated in an interview with Rolling Stone that he would rather keep his bar closed than cater to a crowd celebrating Trump’s nomination. He emphasized that his decision is not based on political affiliations but rather on a desire to maintain a welcoming environment for all patrons.
Despite receiving mixed reactions to his decision, Ramirez remains firm in his stance. He clarified that the closure is not meant to discriminate against any particular group but rather to uphold the bar’s values of inclusivity and respect for all customers.
When asked about the backlash, Ramirez likened it to a “Bud Light moment,” referencing a similar controversy involving a popular beer brand. He expressed indifference towards criticism, emphasizing his commitment to creating a safe and welcoming space for all patrons.
Newsweek reached out for comment from The Mothership but has not received a response as of yet.
