Banjima traditional owners file $1.5 billion claim over Wittenoom asbestos issue

Wittenoom’s traditional owners, the Banjima Native Title Aboriginal Corporation, have initiated a $1.5 billion legal claim against the Western Australia Government regarding extensive asbestos contamination across 46,000 hectares of land. Filed in the Federal Court, the case seeks to mandate cleanup efforts and pursue damages for the environmental and cultural impacts on the Banjima people. The area, which was home to asbestos mining operations, remains highly dangerous and has been declared unsuitable for human occupation.
