After a Calgary judge sentenced John Sproule to two years of house arrest for the manslaughter of Ryden Brogden, Brogden’s family expressed outrage in the courtroom. Sproule, initially charged with second-degree murder, acted in self-defense during a brawl outside a bar in Banff where Brogden attacked him first. The judge noted Sproule’s response was excessive, resulting in Brogden suffering 19 stab wounds. Sproule will also complete 240 hours of community service and remain on probation for two years after his conditional sentence.
