As workers begin dismantling the Superstack, Val Caron retiree Andre Gallant recalls his time as part of the original construction crew in 1970. The stack, completed in 1972, reached 1,250 feet and featured a steel liner, with Gallant managing rebar placement and performing maintenance tasks. Despite safety protocols being lax and fall-prevention gear often ignored, Gallant grew confident at heights, earning the nickname “The Cat” for his agility, and he fondly remembers pouring the last bucket of concrete and celebrating with a Canada flag at the top.
