The first treaty between Indigenous people and the government in Australia has been enacted in Victoria, establishing a permanent First Peoples’ Assembly and a truth-telling body. The treaty was signed by members of the First Peoples Assembly and state Governor Margaret Gardner, marking a historic moment for Aboriginal resistance and healing. Premier Jacinta Allan described it as a new chapter built on truth and mutual respect. The process began in 2016 and follows the failed 2023 referendum to create a permanent Indigenous voice in parliament.
