Auschwitz memorial marks the 80th anniversary of the death camp's liberation

On the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz in OSWIECIM, Poland, survivors, including 86-year-old Tova Friedman, gathered to warn against rising hatred and antisemitism, reflecting on the 1.1 million people, mostly Jews, who were murdered at the site during World War II. World leaders, including German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron, will join elderly survivors at Birkenau for the commemoration, marking the end of an era as survivors grow older and fewer in number. Russian representatives, traditionally central guests, were not present due to the country’s invasion of Ukraine, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy placed a candle at the Babyn Yar Holocaust memorial in Kyiv before attending the ceremonies in Poland.
