Alberta nursing-care staff, represented by the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE), will strike this weekend after unsuccessful negotiations with Alberta Health Services (AHS), leading to the cancellation of elective surgeries starting Saturday. AUPE President Sandra Azocar stated that the employer’s proposals have not addressed wage disparities, which have increased from $15 to $20 an hour. With a 12% vacancy rate, the union emphasizes the need for equitable compensation for licensed practical nurses and health-care aides. Despite the strike, about 78% of union members will continue essential services, as the union seeks a fair agreement.
