At the scene of the Manawanui sinking: ‘You could smell the pungent petrol fumes’

About 5000 square metres of reef in a marine reserve off Samoa’s southern coast has been damaged by HMNZS Manawanui, which ran aground and sank over the weekend. Clean up and salvage operations are ongoing as debris continues to come loose from the vessel, with three cargo containers floating in the sea near the sunken ship.
