Peter O’Mahony just about managed to keep his emotions in check as Amhrán na bhFiann rang around a packed Aviva Stadium, but as soon as Ireland’s Call began, he bowed his head, visibly struggling to hold back the tears.

Tadhg Beirne stood alongside O’Mahony, providing a shoulder to cry on, before he gave his Munster team-mate a warm embrace.
