In a significant ruling, the Supreme Court stated that no fresh suits can be registered against the Places of Worship Act-1991 until the case is heard, also prohibiting courts nationwide from entertaining new lawsuits seeking to reclaim religious places. The apex court is currently reviewing 18 pending suits involving 10 mosques or shrines, including the Shahi Jama Masjid in Sambhal and the Gyanvapi Mosque in Varanasi. Recent cases involving religious places like the Jama Masjid and Salim Chishti’s Dargah in Fatehpur Sikri, the Atala Mosque in Jaunpur, and the Shamsi Jama Masjid in Budaun are also under scrutiny, impacting the ongoing dispute over mosque properties claimed by Hindu plaintiffs.
