More than half of the people served by Asheville’s Water Resources Department, roughly 90,000 to 100,000 individuals, are still without access to water following devastating flooding in the region caused by Tropical Storm Helene. Officials anticipate it will take weeks at a minimum for water to fully return to customers, as the North Fork Reservoir, which supplies nearly 80% of the water system, was heavily affected by sediment. A boil water notice remains in effect for Asheville and Buncombe and Henderson counties, prompting residents to take precautionary measures before using water for consumption or other purposes.
