Targeting the Basij is Essential for Regime Change in Iran

For the first time since the start of hostilities, the Iranian public did not engage in state-sanctioned mourning, instead taking to the streets in celebration. Thousands participated in the Chaharshanbe Suri, or “Festival of Fire,” marking the occasion with festivities that also reflected their jubilation over the recent deaths of key security figures, including Ali Larijani, Iran’s top security chief, and Gholamreza Soleiman, head of the Basij repression unit. These individuals were known for their roles in the violent crackdown on protests in January. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu encouraged the celebrations, highlighting Israeli military strikes that targeted Iran’s security forces, which have been intensifying in recent weeks. Israeli drone operations reportedly focused on Basij checkpoints, significantly undermining the regime’s control and contributing to a shift in public sentiment.

Why It Matters

This development is significant as it highlights a potential shift in the Iranian public’s attitude toward the regime, particularly following the elimination of figures closely associated with state repression. The Basij, initially envisioned as a large volunteer force, is showing signs of internal discontent, suggesting cracks within its foundational support. The ongoing Israeli military actions, combined with the psychological impact of targeted strikes and warnings to Iranian commanders, could further destabilize the Iranian regime’s ability to maintain control. Such events may facilitate greater public dissent and unrest, possibly altering the political landscape in Iran.
