Russian authorities have refused to hand over Syria’s former president, Bashar al-Assad, to acting Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa’s requests, confirmed by the Russian Ambassador to Baghdad. Assad fled Damascus to Russia in December, where he is required to abstain from media and political activities under President Vladimir Putin’s orders. Syria had requested Assad’s return in February, hoping to retrieve funds allegedly deposited by Assad in Moscow, although Russia has denied holding any of his assets.
