Are we becoming a post-literate society?

Neil Postman warned in 1988 about the fragility of human intelligence in the face of media distractions and the rise of visual culture. Recent OECD assessments showed declines in literacy skills in many countries, attributed in part to technology changing how people consume information. AI tools like ChatGPT offer potential to enhance lower-skilled workers’ performance but may also lead to dependence if foundational skills are lacking.
