Archibald Prize 2025: Brisbane artist Julie Fragar wins for portrait of ‘dear friend’ Justene Williams

Brisbane artist Julie Fragar has won the prestigious Archibald Prize for her portrait titled Flagship Mother Multiverse, depicting fellow artist Justene Williams. Chosen unanimously by the Art Gallery of New South Wales trustees, Fragar’s work showcases a grayscale portrayal of Williams floating among stars and marks her as the third consecutive female winner of the award. Alongside this, Jude Rae won the Wynne Prize for landscape painting, and Gene A’Hern secured the Sulman Prize, with women artists comprising the majority of finalists across all competitions.
