A federal appeals court on Friday upheld the Trump administration’s policy of detaining unauthorized immigrants without bond hearings, marking a significant legal win for the administration’s deportation efforts. In a 2-1 ruling, the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals stated that the administration’s reinterpretation of immigration law allowing mandatory detention for all who entered illegally was valid. This policy change has resulted in the indefinite detention of many long-term unauthorized immigrants who would have previously qualified for bond. Despite challenges in other courts deeming the policy illegal, the 5th Circuit reversed two lower court decisions.
