Researchers from the University of Southampton have identified a massive 250-mile-wide mass of molten rock, known as the Northern Appalachian Anomaly, lying 124 miles underground and moving toward New York City at 12 miles per million years. Although its movement is gradual and poses no immediate threat, it may have contributed to the formation of the Appalachian Mountains and is a remnant of geological shifts dating back up to 90 million years.
