Rights group Amnesty International accused the Saudi Arabian franchise of Carrefour of exploiting migrant workers, who were deceived, forced to work excessive hours, denied days off, cheated of earnings, and made to live in poor conditions. Carrefour denied most allegations but planned an external review, with Amnesty calling for action to prevent future abuse. The Saudi government has a zero-tolerance policy for worker abuse, and Carrefour’s Middle East franchisee, Majid Al Futtaim, operates nearly 500 stores in 30 countries, generating significant profits.
