Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, 69, of Chicago, was announced as the first American pope, taking the name Pope Leo XIV. In his inaugural address, he emphasized peace and charity to unify humanity, reflecting the vision of his predecessor, Pope Francis. White smoke from the Sistine Chapel indicated his election on the second day of voting, with significant global support evident among the gathered crowd, including congratulations from U.S. President Donald Trump.
