The US government fined American Airlines $50 million for failing to provide wheelchair assistance to passengers with disabilities and damaging thousands of wheelchairs over a five-year period. The airline has made significant investments to improve handling of wheelchairs and will be credited $25 million for these efforts. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg stated that the era of poor treatment of wheelchair users on airplanes is over, with the Department of Transportation conducting similar investigations into other airlines.
