Amazon, the largest retail entity globally, has discontinued remote “Just Walk Out” checkouts in US-based stores. The decision from Jeffery Bezos’ shopping empire was initially reported by The Information and later confirmed by the company.
Amazon reevaluates retail strategy
The marketplace giant’s “Just Walk Out” option has been replaced with scanners attached to carts, introducing a new system named “Dash Cart” at over 130 retail locations in the United States.
Customers shopping in these stores will no longer be monitored by cameras calculating their total purchase and linking it to their Amazon Account.
The Seattle-based company acquired Whole Foods in a $13.7 billion deal in 2017 and operates Amazon Go in various retail settings across the United States.
The decision to move away from the previous system was influenced by implementation costs and labor disputes, making remote systems challenging. Amazon emphasized consumer feedback, stating that shoppers desired easy access to nearby products, deals, real-time savings tracking, and spending monitoring.
On the Dash Cart platform, Amazon aims to provide a faster, more convenient shopping experience, enabling consumers to maximize their grocery budget through real-time discounts, deals, and onscreen receipts.
Amazon’s Global Grocery stores chief, Tony Hogget, mentioned that not all grocery processes need reinventing, and the company is learning from proven industry practices to enhance the shopping experience. He also indicated that Dash Cart locations would be upgraded to support Amazon’s grocery ambitions as part of “Version 2” sites.
During a Quarter 4 earnings call, CEO Andy Jassy highlighted the importance of physical presence in serving diverse grocery needs, mentioning ongoing tests of a new Fresh format in select locations.
It remains to be seen whether this customer-centric approach will be successful for Amazon, but it reflects the direction set by Jassy and Hogget.
