Toronto’s speed cameras have been removed as of November 2023, ending Premier Doug Ford’s campaign against them, which he labeled a “cash grab.” The initiative started after a tragic accident in 2021 led to the installation of cameras that issued over 24,000 tickets in a year, but public backlash grew, culminating in vandalism and Ford’s ultimatum to eliminate them. Despite evidence showing speed cameras reduced traffic speeds and improved safety, city officials faced pressure to abandon the program. Ultimately, the city shifted focus to traffic-calming measures with $210 million allocated for municipalities.
