The Malaysia government awarded the RM16.5 billion second 5G network rollout contract to U Mobile Sdn Bhd, a joint venture between a government crony and royalty, Ibrahim Iskandar and Vincent Tan Chee Yioun. This decision has raised concerns about Digital Nasional Bhd’s financial sustainability and favoritism towards smaller players like U Mobile over larger competitors like Maxis Bhd. However, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission defended the decision, stating that U Mobile will collaborate with other mobile network operators in implementing Malaysia’s Second 5G Network.
