Syria’s interim president Ahmed al-Sharaa met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to strengthen ties, discussing a potential defence pact allowing Turkey to use Syrian airspace and establish airbases. Turkey aims to assert influence in post-Assad Syria, addressing security concerns related to the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces and the YPG, which Ankara sees as linked to the PKK. Al-Sharaa’s visit follows talks with Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince on reconstruction, showcasing Syria’s efforts to secure regional support.
