Akwesasne woman wanted by U.S. in fatal human-smuggling case is denied bail

Stephanie Square, a Mohawk from Akwesasne, was denied bail by Superior Court Justice Daniel Royer in Montreal after being arrested as a suspect in four of the nine deaths from a human smuggling incident across the Canada/U.S. border. Evidence suggests Square continued to smuggle humans into the U.S. even after the tragic boat sinking that resulted in the deaths in March 2023. She faces extradition to the U.S. where she is charged with offenses related to the four individuals who drowned.
