African football undergoes significant changes with the establishment of the African Nations League and the transition of the Africa Cup of Nations to a four-year cycle.
Patrice Motsepe, president of the Confederation of African Football, announced these changes ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup hosted by Morocco. The next Africa Cup, set for 2027 in Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania, will be followed by the 2028 edition, allowing the inaugural African Nations League to occur in 2029. This new league will feature all 54 African nations divided into four zones, with matches scheduled for September and October, culminating in finals in November. Motsepe emphasized that this initiative will bring top African players back to the continent for annual competition.
