Driven out of their homes
In Ghana, belief in witchcraft leads to the ostracism and banishment of vulnerable women, particularly in the northern regions where “witch camps” serve as their last refuge. Director John Azumah highlights the unique prevalence of these camps, overseen by traditional leaders, as well as the societal violence against women accused of witchcraft. Accusations can stem from jealousy or conflict, resulting in tragic outcomes, like the lynching of 90-year-old Akua Denteh in 2020. Even when traditional rituals exonerate them, accused women rarely return home, as communities often refuse to accept them back.
