The Serious Fraud Office (SFO) has charged United Insurance Brokers Limited, a Lloyd’s of London reinsurance broker, with failing to prevent bribes to Ecuadorean officials between 2013 and 2016. The charges stem from allegations that UIB paid $3.2 million to US intermediaries to secure $38 million in reinsurance contracts with state-owned companies in Ecuador. This case highlights the UK’s commitment to combating international bribery, as UIB prepares to appear in court on May 7, following a broader investigation into corruption involving UK insurers.
