In 2025, a rare species of bioluminescent jellyfish, known as the mauve stinger jellyfish, was spotted on a Durban beach, creating a stunning sight in the dark with their clear bodies and lavender-hued tentacles. These jellyfish were likely pushed close to the shore by strong winds, according to Ann Kunz from Saambr, and some were saved by the Saambr team for display at uShaka Sea World.
