Ottawa and Alberta sign agreement to tackle homelessness

Seniors, Community and Social Services Minister Jason Nixon announced that the federal government will provide $35 million over two years to Alberta for homelessness initiatives, matched by provincial funds, benefiting Edmonton, Calgary, Red Deer, and Lethbridge. The funding will support long-term transitional shelters, increase shelter capacity, and enhance outreach systems. Nixon stated that the province will invest $213 million in homeless initiatives if Budget 2025 is passed, aiming to stabilize the emergency shelter system and expand housing projects.
